PAT Testing for Hertfordshire & North London Businesses

Portable Appliance Testing carried out by a competent person. Keep your electrical equipment safe, your staff protected, and your business compliant.

What is PAT Testing?

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is the process of inspecting and testing portable electrical appliances to ensure they are safe to use. It involves a visual inspection of the appliance and its lead, followed by a series of electrical tests using specialist equipment.

While PAT testing is not a specific legal requirement in the same way as a fire risk assessment, employers and business owners have a legal duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 to ensure that all electrical equipment in the workplace is maintained in a safe condition. PAT testing is the recognised way to demonstrate that duty of care has been met.

Insurers increasingly require evidence of regular PAT testing, and failure to maintain records can invalidate a claim in the event of an electrical fire or injury.

Who needs PAT testing?

Any business or organisation that uses portable electrical appliances should have them regularly tested, including:

  • Offices and co-working spaces
  • Shops and retail units
  • Cafés, restaurants and hospitality venues
  • Hair salons, beauty salons and spas
  • Gyms, leisure centres and studios
  • Warehouses and industrial premises
  • Healthcare and dental practices
  • Schools, nurseries and educational settings
  • Landlords with HMOs or furnished rental properties
  • Event venues and hire equipment operators

What our PAT testing includes

Visual inspection

Every appliance is visually checked for signs of damage, wear, incorrect fusing, or unsafe modifications before any electrical test is carried out.

Earth continuity test

Confirms that the earth connection in Class I appliances is intact and provides adequate protection against electric shock.

Insulation resistance test

Checks that the insulation between live conductors and accessible parts is sufficient to prevent electric shock or fire.

Functional check

Each appliance is switched on and checked to confirm it operates as intended, with no unusual heat, noise or behaviour.

Pass/fail labelling

Every tested item receives a clearly dated pass or fail label so you always know the status of each appliance at a glance.

Full written register

You receive a complete asset register listing every appliance tested, its result, and the date — suitable for insurance, audits and due diligence.
